About LongHandPixels Press
Hello, my name is Scott Gilbertson and for many years I ran Wired's Webmonkey.com.
When Wired shut Webmonkey down earlier this year it left me with some free time. I stepped away from the web completely for about six months. Okay, it was only three. But I needed some time off. It's good to step back every now and then, to re-evaluate and make sure that you still love what you do and, if you don't, figure out something new to do.
The truth is Webmonkey and web development stopped being fun for me some time ago. I didn't sign up to chase pageviews. I started writing for Webmonkey because I enjoyed teaching people how to make cool stuff on the web. But the reality of most large online publishers is that, at the end of the day, all that matters is pageviews. Link bait headlines and breathless reviews trump helpful tutorials and longer, more nuanced writing.
One day I was complaining about this to a friend, who also happens to be an ex-Webmonkey writer, when he said, "hey, it's the web, you can do whatever you want. Go write a book or something."
So I did. And that's how LongHandPixels Press was born (I bought the domain a few years ago because I thought it had a nice ring to it, but I never could think of a good enough use for it. Now I have one)
My goal for LongHandPixels is to publish three or four books per year covering single topics with a style that's easy to read and easy to understand.
I hope these books will educate and inform without overwhelming. Web development today is more complex than ever. Forget building anything, just keeping track of all this new stuff is a full time job -- one that I've had for 13 years. Now I want to bring the same wit and clarity that made Webmonkey famous to the ebook format.
The first book will cover responsive web design - fluid layouts, media queries and flexible media, but also more advanced elements of RWD like mobile first development, as well as some tips and tricks for building faster responsive sites.
My goal is to have this book available by the end of October. In the mean time I'll be excerpting some chapters on the blog here and giving away some PDF samples on the mailing list. If you're interested drop your email in the box below.
Thanks for reading, and if you have any questions feel free to hit me up at [email protected].
